"I’m a Damage Prevention Specialist (DPS) for the New Mexico Public Regulatory Commission,” said Sefie Anaya. “My role includes educating those who dig in New Mexico about the importance of digging safely. We have an excavation law that defines our expectations, and we want everyone to be work within the scope of the law.” Three years ago, the PRC in partnership with New Mexico One Call and other stakeholders established a plan for enforcing their excavation law and for reducing damages to their vital underground infrastructure. The plan included the establishment of the DPS position for which Sefie was hired.
Kari Biernacki, Vice President of AUI Inc, speaks with more than 19 years of experience. She said, “Utility owner/operators don’t want their underground facilities damaged. Contractors in general and AUI specifically couldn’t agree with them more. We all want the same thing; no injuries and no damages. Even if no one gets hurt, there is the downtime and other associated expenses with the damage. In addition, there is personal pride at stake in completing a job satisfactorily.”
It has been said that the greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it. Sandy Jones, Chairman of the New Mexico Public Regulatory Commission aims high. He gets it. Protecting New Mexico’s vital infrastructure and making the state a safer place to live and work is aiming high. Such an undertaking is not for the faint of heart. Chairman Jones brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding to any discussion involving the need for a stronger and more effective damage prevention program. Most of his life has revolved around construction work. He founded and operated Sandy Jones Construction, a statewide road construction company for 25 years, and he talks about those days with the same kind of pride a father would talk about his son.
The New Mexico One Call Board of Directors have long been committed to promoting damage prevention across the state and on behalf of the board I am truly excited to share with you the first issue of our magazine, “New Mexico 811.” The magazine is committed to promoting damage prevention through the power of partnership.
